G Dragon’s “Drama” Perfectly Tells the Story of a Toxic Relationship
Only the king of K Pop can deliver a song this hauntingly beautiful
I didn’t know anything about T.O.P. or Big Bang when T.O.P. skipped his way across my television screen while watching Squid Game, but my TikTok for you page was soon filled with his handsome face. I learned his backstory in a matter of minutes, but most importantly, I fell down the rabbit hole of his music.
Within that rabbit hole, I discovered his former bandmate and king of K-pop, G Dragon. There was something about G Dragon’s music that led me to develop a small obsession. Everyone I knew either heard me talk about G Dragon or was forced to listen to his beautiful voice. I was watching his concert footage like a teenager with a crush.
I danced along to “Too Bad” and found myself singing along to “Take Me”. I even accidentally played “Gyro-Drop” on the speaker at work.
Then I heard the song I had been avoiding, “Drama.” I didn’t avoid the song because it was bad or because I didn’t like it. I was skipping past the song because of the way it made me feel. It was the first song I’d ever heard that made me feel understood.
G Dragon’s song, “Drama”, perfectly describes the abusive relationship I found myself in. The line, “You never like it when it’s nice,” is especially difficult to listen to, because I lived the line. My ex never liked our relationship when it was nice; he would pick fights with me over minor inconveniences.
He was also the ‘drama queen’ of our relationship, which is another line from the song, ‘drama queen got it from her momma’. Everything was a potential source of conflict with him. The kitchen wasn’t clean while I was cooking, there was something on TV that he didn’t like, or heaven forbid, I was spending time with my dogs. I never knew what would set him off, but I’d grown used to his temper tantrums and viewed them as part of him. A part of him that I accepted, even though I shouldn’t.
The lyric, ‘Seems like you’d like to start an argument, win or lose just for the hell of it’, describes the relationship better than any words I’ve ever written or spoken. Sometimes it seemed like picking fights was my ex’s greatest strength, because he wanted to argue over anything and everything.
Whenever G Dragon performs the song, he sings it into a mic designed to resemble a wedding dress. This especially hits home for me, because my ex often spoke of marriage, going so far as to call me so that he could yell that he’d wanted to marry me after we’d broken up.
Other lyrics within the song allude to giving up on the relationship, while being the one who put in the effort. The lyrics are relatable, and the truth many have come to the heartbreaking realization that their relationships only worked because of their effort.
It’s always been easy for me to listen to music and forget that there were human emotions behind the songs. I’d always chosen happy, or angsty songs, but I’ve never had a song affect me in the way “Drama” has. It’s clear that G Dragon poured a bit of himself and his experience with a terrible relationship into the song, which some fans claim is about T.O.P.
While I don’t know, or care, who the song is about, it’s clear that it was written from a difficult place. It’s not a simple, upbeat song to sing along with on a summer day. It’s a powerful, emotion-fueled song where G Dragon’s voice sometimes cracks.
I never knew the truth behind the statement ‘a song that touched my soul’, until I heard G Dragon’s “Drama’. Maybe if the song had been produced and released sooner, it would have helped me to confront the uncomfortable truth about my relationship. My relationship was abusive and unhealthy, just like the relationship in the song, but it’s over, and I have healed from it.
Hopefully, the song can help other people who are in similar relationships. Not everyone can recognize that they are in an unhealthy situation while they are in it. G Dragon’s “Drama” is about a toxic relationship, but it’s also about healing and moving forward.
