About this challenge
The Prompt
Critique a popular work in just 50 words.
The primary focus of the new Critique community is to post a piece that you want critiqued. Now, it's your turn to critique a popular work in just 50 words. Can you capture the essence of a masterpiece (or its flaws) in just a few sentences? We admit we're a bit obsessed with challenges that focus on brevity, but we believe that a good critique need not be long-winded. Our hope is that this challenge will make you more comfortable critiquing.
Wondering what we mean by "a popular work"? A "popular work" refers to a piece of literature, art, music, film, or other form of media that has gained widespread recognition, appreciation, and often commercial success in the general population. Such works often resonate with many people, leading to discussions, adaptations, and even influencing culture. Examples of popular works could include bestselling novels, blockbuster movies, chart-topping music albums, viral online content, and iconic paintings or sculptures that attract millions of visitors.
In order for your submission to qualify, it must:
- Be exactly 50 words.
- Include the title of the popular work in the story title.
- Be submitted to the Critique community. Choosing a community is a final step in the submission process.
The Prizes
- Grand Prize: $500
- Second Place: $250
- 10 Runners-Up: $25

A Transparent Look at Vocal Challenges and Top Stories
Almost three years ago, we shared a resource article that served as a place for people to suggest new challenge prompts. We thought it would be a good idea to refresh that thread, and take the opportunity to answer a few common questions about top stories, how challenges are judged and how submissions are reviewed.

A System That Isn’t Working Challenge Winners
Systems promise order. They organize behavior, distribute opportunity, and suggest that if everyone follows the rules, things will work. The entries in A System That Isn’t Working look closely at what happens when that promise begins to slip.
