The Envious Man and the Man of Light

A Powerful Tale of Jealousy, Betrayal, and Divine Justice

By Mariana FariasPublished about 16 hours ago 4 min read

In a quiet town of modest size, where neighbors knew each other by name and life moved at a gentle pace, there lived two men in adjoining houses. At first glance, they seemed ordinary—just two residents sharing a boundary wall. But behind that wall grew a darkness that would soon change both their lives forever.

One of the men was kind, humble, and content with what little he had. He greeted others with warmth, helped those in need, and lived a life free of malice. The other man, however, was consumed by envy. Day after day, he watched his neighbor with growing bitterness. The more he saw of the good man’s peaceful life and the respect he earned, the more his heart burned with hatred.

This jealousy did not fade with time—it deepened. The envious man could not sleep in peace, nor could he find joy in his own life. Every success, every smile of his neighbor felt like a personal insult to him.

Sensing this growing hostility, the good man decided to leave. He did not wish for conflict or hatred. Believing that distance might heal his neighbor’s heart, he sold his small home and humble belongings and moved away to the capital city, hoping for a fresh start.

Just outside the city, about half a mile away, he found a peaceful property. It had a spacious garden, a modest courtyard, and in the center stood an old, forgotten well. The place felt calm, almost sacred.

Wishing to dedicate his life to peace and spirituality, the man adopted the simple robe of a dervish. He divided his home into small cells and invited others who sought a life of devotion to join him. Soon, the place transformed into a humble monastery.

Over time, his kindness and wisdom became known far and wide. People from distant places—rich and poor alike—came to seek his guidance and prayers. His reputation grew, and with it, the respect and admiration of many.

But news travels fast.

The envious man soon heard of his former neighbor’s rising fame. Instead of softening his heart, it ignited an even greater rage within him.

“How can he find peace and honor while I suffer?” he thought bitterly.

Blinded by hatred, he made a dangerous decision—he would destroy the man he envied.

Leaving everything behind, he traveled to the monastery. When he arrived, he was welcomed warmly by the dervish, who held no grudge and recognized no enemy. With a smile, he offered him shelter and respect.

The envious man pretended humility.

“I have come with a private matter of great importance,” he whispered. “I need your guidance—but it must remain secret.”

Trusting him completely, the dervish instructed all others to retire to their cells. As night began to fall, the two men walked alone in the quiet courtyard.

The envious man spoke at length, weaving a false tale, slowly guiding their steps closer to the old well.

Then, in a sudden act of betrayal—he pushed the dervish into the well.

Without looking back, he fled into the darkness, convinced that he had finally rid himself of the source of his envy.

But fate had other plans.

Unknown to human eyes, the well was inhabited by mystical beings—fairies and genii. As the dervish fell, they caught him gently, saving him from certain death.

Though he could see nothing, the dervish remained still, sensing something extraordinary had occurred.

Then he heard voices.

“Do you know who this man is?” one voice asked.

“No,” replied others.

“This man is pure of heart,” the voice continued. “He left his home to escape the hatred of his neighbor, hoping to heal it through distance. Yet the envy followed him, and his enemy sought his life.”

The dervish listened silently.

Another voice spoke, “He is destined for a greater purpose. Tomorrow, the Sultan himself will come seeking his help.”

“The Sultan?” another asked. “Why would he come?”

“His daughter, the princess, is possessed by a powerful genie—Maimoum, son of Dimdim.”

“Can she be cured?”

“Yes,” the voice replied. “And this dervish holds the key. In his monastery lives a black cat with seven white hairs on its tail. If he burns three of those hairs and lets the smoke touch the princess’s head, she will be freed forever.”

The voices faded.

The dervish remembered every word.

At dawn, he noticed a broken section in the well’s wall. Carefully, he climbed out and returned to the surface.

The other dervishes were overjoyed to see him alive. He told them of the betrayal but spoke without anger—only truth.

Soon after, the black cat appeared, just as it did every morning. The dervish gently took it in his arms and carefully plucked seven white hairs from its tail, saving them for what was to come.

Not long after sunrise, the Sultan arrived with a grand procession. His face showed both authority and deep worry.

He approached the dervish with respect.

“Wise man,” said the Sultan, “I have come for your help. My daughter suffers from a strange and terrible illness. No healer has been able to cure her.”

The dervish nodded calmly.

“Bring her to me.”

When the princess was brought forward, her condition was clear—she was restless, her eyes filled with fear and something unnatural.

The dervish burned three of the white hairs. As the smoke rose, he directed it toward her head.

At once, the princess screamed—and then suddenly fell silent.

A shadow seemed to leave her body.

Moments later, she opened her eyes—clear, peaceful, and free.

The Sultan was overwhelmed with joy.

“You have saved my daughter!” he exclaimed. “Ask for anything—it is yours.”

The dervish simply replied, “Justice is all I ask.”

He told the Sultan everything—the envy, the betrayal, and the attempt on his life.

The envious man was found, brought before the court, and punished for his crimes.

And so, justice was served.

Moral of the Story:

Envy is a silent destroyer—it harms not only others but consumes the one who carries it. Meanwhile, goodness, patience, and faith are always rewarded, often in ways beyond imagination.
