Why We Celebrate April Fools Day

Truth is, no one can point to one single moment and say, this is exactly where it began. The strongest story goes back to the 1500s, when France changed its calendar. The new year used to be celebrated at the end of March, leading into April. Then it was officially moved to January 1st.Not everyone caught on. Some people kept celebrating in April, either because they did not know, or they refused to change. And others began to mock them. They would send them on pointless errands, give fake gifts, play tricks, and laugh, calling them fools. “April fools.”

That is where the name is believed to come from. In France, they even stuck paper fish on people’s backs without them knowing, calling it “Poisson d’Avril,” meaning April fish, someone easy to catch. Over time, the idea spread across countries. In places like England, it became a day for harmless tricks, jokes before midday, a bit of laughter without cruelty, at least that is how it is meant to be. No deep ceremony, no grand reason. Just a tradition that grew from confusion, change, and human nature. We laugh, we trick, we get caught out. maybe that is the point of it. A reminder not to believe everything straight away. A reminder that we are all, at some point, a little bit of a fool.
