The First Moment of Orphanage Grief

The painful journey of the life of Hazrat Muhammad (ﷺ) when even his mother's shadow rose upon his return

This is a very touching and instructive incident that happened to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was still very young, about six years old, when his mother, Hazrat Aminah (may Allah be pleased with her), decided to take her son to Medina so that he could meet his relatives. Medina was then known as Yathrib and was where his paternal grandfather’s family lived. The trip was to strengthen love and kinship.

Hazrat Amina (RA) took her son Muhammad (PBUH) with her and set out from Mecca for Medina. She was accompanied by a loyal maidservant, Umm Ayman (RA). The journey was not easy in those days. There was no comfortable ride, no smooth roads—just desert heat, sand, and a long journey. But the mother had love for her son and a desire to meet her family, so she set out with courage.

Upon reaching Medina, Hazrat Amina (RA) spent a few days with her relatives. She also showed Muhammad (PBUH) the mementos of her father Hazrat Abdullah (RA), as his father had died before his birth. This day was filled with love, memories, and

After spending some time, it was time to return. Hazrat Amina (RA) set out for Mecca again with her son and Umm Ayman (RA). But this return journey was bringing with it a great trial.

On the way, when they reached the place "Abwa", Hazrat Amina's health deteriorated. The illness intensified. Little Muhammad ﷺ was with his mother, an innocent child who was watching his mother's suffering, but could not do anything. These moments were very painful.

Finally, Hazrat Amina (RA) died at the same place. It is difficult to imagine how great a shock it is for a small child to lose his mother. Hazrat Muhammad (ﷺ) was now an orphan—first his father was gone, and now his mother was also separated.

Umm Ayman took care of the little child with great love and compassion. She buried Hazrat Amina there and then returned to Mecca with Muhammad (peace be upon him). On this journey, a child was returning with a mountain of sorrow in his heart, but this same child was going to become a mercy for all of humanity.

This incident teaches us several important lessons. First, that even the prophets of Allah go through trials. The life of Hazrat Muhammad (ﷺ) was full of difficulties from the very beginning, but he never lost his patience. The second lesson is that Allah never leaves His servants alone. Although both of his parents had passed away, Allah created other supports for him—his grandfather Abdul Muttalib (RA) and then his uncle Abu Talib (RA).

This incident teaches us patience, courage, and trust in Allah. Life brings difficulties, but if we are patient and have faith in Allah, He will show us a better path.

These early trials of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were actually a preparation for the great responsibility he was to shoulder later. He not only bore his own sorrow but also brought a message of guidance and mercy to all humanity.

May Allah grant us patience, mercy, and strong faith. Amen.
