The Poor Tailor of Damascus

In the ancient city of Damascus, where the scent of jasmine filled the air and the calls of merchants echoed through the bustling bazaars, lived a poor but skilled tailor named Bilal.

Bilal had a small shop near the mosque, where he spent long hours stitching garments for the townspeople. His hands were quick, his stitches flawless, but his earnings were meager. Despite his struggles, he never cheated his customers and always trusted in Allah’s provisions.

One evening, as he was preparing to close his shop, a wealthy merchant entered, dressed in fine silk robes and carrying a bundle of the most expensive fabric Bilal had ever seen.

“I need a robe stitched within three days,” the merchant said. “It must be perfect.”

Bilal took the fabric carefully. “I will do my best, sir.”

The merchant tossed a silver coin onto the table. “Finish it on time, and I shall pay you ten more.”

Bilal nodded, knowing that this order could feed his family for weeks.

The Temptation

That night, as Bilal worked under the flickering candlelight, he picked up the coin to examine it. It felt heavier than usual. His brow furrowed as he turned it over in his palm.

“This is no ordinary silver coin…” he murmured.

His heart skipped a beat as he realized the truth—the coin was pure silver, worth ten times what the merchant intended to pay!

A small voice crept into his mind. The merchant is rich. He won’t notice if I keep it. This could buy food, clothes, and even better tools for my shop.

But then, his conscience whispered back: Would Allah be pleased with dishonesty?

Bilal closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The struggle in his heart was real, but his faith was stronger. He had lived in poverty his entire life, yet he had never earned a single dishonest coin.

He wrapped the silver coin in a cloth and made a firm decision.

“I will return it in the morning.”

The Honest Decision

At dawn, Bilal made his way through the crowded streets to the merchant’s grand house. The mansion was vast, its gates made of iron, guarded by two strong men. Bilal hesitated for a moment before stepping forward.

“I must speak to the merchant,” he said.

After a moment, the guards allowed him inside, leading him through halls decorated with golden lanterns and rich carpets.

The merchant sat at a long table, enjoying a breakfast of dates, honey, and fresh bread. He looked up, surprised to see Bilal.

“Have you finished the robe already?” he asked.

“No, my lord,” Bilal said, bowing respectfully. “But I believe you gave me the wrong coin.”

He placed the silver coin on the table.

The merchant picked it up and examined it. His eyes narrowed.

“You could have kept this,” he said slowly. “Why return it?”

Bilal straightened his back and replied, “Because honesty is worth more than silver.”

The merchant studied him for a long moment before nodding. “Come back tomorrow,” he said.

Bilal left, confused but content, knowing he had done the right thing.

The Unexpected Reward

The next day, Bilal returned to the merchant’s house. To his shock, the merchant handed him a heavy bag full of silver coins.

“This is your reward,” the merchant said with a small smile. “I was testing you.”

Bilal’s eyes widened. “Testing me?”

“Yes,” the merchant said. “I need an honest man to manage my business. A man who values integrity over wealth. Would you work for me?”

Bilal’s heart pounded. A chance like this was beyond his dreams. He had spent his life struggling, yet here was an opportunity to change everything.

“I… I would be honored,” he said, his voice full of gratitude.

A Life Transformed

From that day forward, Bilal’s life changed forever.

No longer was he a struggling tailor; he became the trusted advisor and business partner of one of the wealthiest merchants in Damascus. His shop grew, his family prospered, but most importantly—he never forgot the lesson of the silver coin.

He continued to give charity, treat others with kindness, and remind young traders that honesty is the greatest wealth of all.

And every time he held a silver coin, he smiled, remembering the day he chose honesty over greed—and how Allah rewarded him beyond his imagination.

Moral of the Story:

Wealth can be lost, but integrity lasts forever. What we earn honestly brings true blessings, for Allah rewards those who choose righteousness over temptation.
