Real Reason Why I've Never Been in Relationship - Ayra Starr

Ayra opens up

By Jide OkonjoPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr is one of the biggest Afrobeats stars of the moment with hit songs such as "Commas", "Rush", and more. Ayra has also done a number of songs about love and relationships including "Rhythm & Blues", "Last Heartbreak Song", and "Lagos Love Story" but despite singing about this theme, the singer herself confesses that she has never been in a relationship of her own.

So then, how does one who has never experienced romantic love of her own or had a relationship sing about the theme, and why has one of the most eligible bachelorettes in the world never been in a relationship? Here's what Ayra Starr had to say about these two things.

Speaking on how she's been able to write songs about love and relationships without being in one herself, Ayra Starr revealed saying:

AYRA STARR: I would write about everything from life to TV shows. My friends would tell me ‘Ohh, my boyfriend did this’ and I’d be like, ‘That would make a good song. I would just watch people. I was a viewer, and I loved to listen.”

Speaking about why she's never been in love or in a relationship herself, Ayra opened up saying:

AYRA STARR: I want to fall in love. I wrote ‘Lagos Love Story’ about what love would look like if I was. I'm a lover girl deep in my heart, I’m just very strong-head- ed about it. I actually have never been in love... I’ve been in certain situations – not situationships! – but I’ve never been in a fully committed relationship.

I’ve put myself out there and I’ve tried to see what’s there. But I don’t think I’ve had the time – I’ve always been working. I’ve been working since I was 15: I was modelling, I was doing university, and now I’m on the road [When I pick men in the crowd to sing to, dance for or flirt with], it’s me just enjoying myself as a girl. I’m like, let me sing to a cute boy today and I’m looking around because I can – why not?”
