Understanding Soul Contracts and the Difference Between Twin Flames and Karmic Soulmates

When people first learn about soul contracts or the idea of a soul curriculum, they often make the same mistake: they start interpreting every relationship through the lens of their own personality and their own ego. They assume every person was “brought into their life” to teach them something, as if the contract is one‑sided. But a soul contract is never one‑directional. If someone is part of your curriculum, you are part of theirs. You are learning from them just as much as they are learning from you. This mutuality is the foundation of the curriculum I describe in The Soul’s Curriculum — every soul is both student and teacher, and every interaction is an exchange.

This is where the distinction between a karmic soulmate and a twin flame becomes important. A karmic soulmate is someone whose energy you agreed to learn from. They can be a guide, a mentor, a challenger, or a mirror for your growth. They help you evolve, and you help them evolve. These relationships can be intense, emotional, and transformative, but they are not twin flame connections. They are part of the curriculum — lessons you chose, experiences you needed, and opportunities for your ego to soften and expand. Being in a karmic relationship is vitally important and not "less than" a twin flame connection.

A twin flame is something entirely different. Twin flames negotiate their soul contracts together because they are one soul in two expressions. Their lessons are shared lessons. Their growth is shared growth. A twin flame is not a guide or a teacher; they are another level of you — the divine masculine or the divine feminine expression of the same soul. Because of this, the connection is not something you talk about casually. It is private, sacred, and instinctively protected. You do not gossip about a twin flame. You do not complain about them. You do not analyze them the way you might analyze a karmic soulmate. The relationship is too deep, too internal, too intertwined with your own being.

This is why people who claim their “twin flame is cheating” or that they “want to leave their twin flame” are revealing something important: they are not describing a twin flame at all. They are describing a karmic soulmate, and their ego is trying to elevate the relationship into something it is not to give them validation. That confusion is often part of the lesson itself. Karmic soulmates can feel overwhelming, magnetic, or destabilizing, and the ego wants to assign meaning to that intensity. But intensity is not the marker of a twin flame. The inability to speak about the connection casually is.

There are times when one twin flame transitions into spirit and begins what many call a “walk‑in” with the twin who is still in a physical body. This isn’t possession, interference, or anything dramatic. It’s simply another step toward the final reunification that happens in spirit form. Because we don’t have language in the third dimension that fully captures this process, people often describe it in ways that sound ego‑driven or sensationalized. In truth, the experience is neither creepy nor disconcerting. It is quiet, comforting, and profoundly natural. The surviving twin begins to carry the lessons, strengths, and emotional maturity (and funny enough sometimes they will start exhibiting behaviors or their twin, (i.e., they might like different foods or suddenly desire to go to places they have never been before) one who has crossed over, and this can create a noticeable shift in their behavior and awareness. This a natural part of one route to reunification.

When this merging happens, it often creates a fracture in the surviving twin’s life — not because anything is wrong, but because their inner landscape changes quickly. They may suddenly feel wiser, more grounded, or more spiritually attuned, and the people around them may not understand the shift. This is simply part of the reunification process. It is not the end of the journey but a transition point, and it deserves its own deeper discussion, which I can explore in another article.

Twin flames can and do meet in the physical world, and they can begin the unification process while still in human form, but full reunification cannot happen while the soul is constrained by the body. The human form cannot hold that level of merging. True reunification happens when the entire soul is released, when the separation of form dissolves, and the two expressions return to One who then returns to Source.

Your soul contract — the agreements you made, the lessons you chose, the energies you are meant to encounter — is reflected in your astrological natal chart and in the Akashic records. These are not abstract ideas; they are maps of your curriculum. Karma happens when you still are learning a lesson or experience. Karma is not a consequence; it is a process of learning. And within that curriculum, karmic soulmates play an essential role. There is nothing wrong with being in a karmic soulmate relationship. It means you are growing. It means you are learning. It means you are doing the work your soul came here to do.

Every relationship carries karmic lessons, even the gentle ones. Those lessons always come back to the same core themes: kindness, compassion, and love. Empathy is the bridge that allows you to learn from another soul’s experience as deeply as you learn from your own. When you remember that every soul you meet is learning through you just as you are learning through them, the curriculum becomes clearer. You stop asking why someone was brought into your life and start asking what the two of you are learning together.

I’ve written several books on the soul curriculum, the illusion of death, and the deeper structure behind near‑death experiences. Much of this work has been channeled through my spirit guides — and yes, everyone has guides, but they are not your twin flame. Once I receive the messages, I always research them in the physical world to make sure what I’m receiving is knowledge and not ego. That balance between intuition and verification is essential to the work.

If any of these subjects speak to you, you’re welcome to reach out. I’m happy to share a link to where the books can be found.
