Hubris
What will we leave behind once we have destroyed ourselves?
The horrors of humanity
have never been more televised.
A novel tragedy thrums through waves
reaching my eyes and ears
any time I flip on a TV.
More innocent people dying
as the news falsely proclaims,
"We are winning the war on terror!"
while being the terrorists themselves.
Is it that they can't sense the irony
or do they think we have
the same IQ as them
and can't see the truth?
I'm not sure which one is worse.
Has humanity always been this cruel?
If so, are we even worth saving?
The nihilist in me whispers,
"Just watch it burn,
save yourself,"
yet my optimistic side,
that tiny flickering flame
barely lit as the winds ravage it,
well it screams,
"We must hope for better from ourselves!"
But I can't think of a time
in recorded history at least
that humans have ever been
overwhelmingly philanthropic.
Perhaps individuals, sure,
but humanity as a whole
has been more brutal than kind,
more calloused than caring,
more deadly than healing.
We may fight ourselves forever
until our final demise
unless something
no, everything,
changes.
I guess the only question left is
where to start.
