The Distance Between Who You Were
Just try to remember before you make any mistakes

The Distance Between Who You Were
There is a distance you can feel,
Between the past and who you stand,
Not measured in the steps you’ve taken,
But in what you understand.
You remember former versions,
Of a self that could not see,
The depth of what was forming,
Or the cost of what would be.
There is no shame in not yet knowing,
In being lost before you learn,
Every path requires a blindness,
Before the truth begins to burn.
Growth is not a gentle rising,
It does not lift without a scar,
It pulls apart what once felt certain,
To show you who you are.
You outgrow the things you clung to,
The beliefs that held you still,
Not because they had no meaning,
But because they shaped your will.
And though you may look back with longing,
At the simplicity you knew,
There is something far more powerful,
In the self that has come through.
You are not what you once carried,
Not the weight you used to bear,
You are shaped by what you’ve faced now,
And the strength that led you there.
The distance is not something empty,
It is filled with all you’ve gained,
Every lesson, every breaking,
Every loss that has remained.
So stand within this present version,
Do not wish yourself undone,
For everything that came before you,
Has made you who you’ve become.
And though the road is never finished,
And the change will never end,
There is power in the knowing,
You have learned how to ascend.
