The Plumber Who Became An MP!!!

The Rise of Hannah Spencer.

MP for Gorton and Denton: Hannah Spencer.

Hannah Spencer's rise to being an elected member of parliament has been groundbreaking. Why groundbreaking, I hear you ask? Well, Hannah Spencer's victory in the Gorton and Denton by-election was the first time the Green Party has ever won a by-election. In fact, it's the biggest victory any Green Party candidate has ever won. At 34, Hannah is also the youngest MP in parliament. She's also the Green Party's first Northern English MP. Gorton and Denton was always a safe Labour seat. But come the Denton and Gorton by-election, there was a new kid on the block: Hannah Spencer.

Hannah was elected with a thumping and resounding majority. Trouncing the Labour candidate, and let's be honest, Kemi Badenoch's candidate for the Conservatives might as well not have bothered. Reform UK came second, something of a shock for them; however, given the area's demographics, it's not surprising. Of course, Green Party Leader Zack Polanski was with her, congratulating Hannah. Mr. Polanski heralded it as a taste of things to come. Whether Hannah's victory is a taste of things to come or a protest vote against Keir Starmer will remain to be seen. Ms. Spencer told Sky News at the time that a Green victory "was always possible". She followed that up with: "There is an appetite for change".

Hannah was born in Bolton in the North West of England. She currently lives in Trafford, in Manchester. Ms. Spencer has one thing in common with her leader, Zack Polanski: they are both Mancunians. Mr. Polanski was born in Manchester, but is now a member of the London Assembly. Hannah is Mancunian by adoption, as she now resides in Trafford, part of Manchester. Of course, now that Hannah is a member of Parliament, she will require a place in London.

Before being elected to parliament, Hannah was a town hall council member. She tried to get elected as the Green Party's candidate for Mayor, but she was unsuccessful.

Hannah left school at 16 and trained as a plumber. A job she was doing right up until she won the Gorton and Denton seat. Hannah had her own plumbing company called 'Hannah's Household Plumbing". She retrofitted houses to modern, sustainable ones. Hannah had just passed her exams to be a plasterer before she was elected. As she explained, once elected, she would have to cancel work as a plumber because being an MP would take up so much of her time.

Hannah joined the Green Party in 2022. As I said earlier, Hannah served as a councillor for the Trafford council. Hannah has always been an animal rights activist. She campaigned for the rights of greyhounds in the exploitative sport of greyhound racing. Ms. Spencer endorsed the candidature of Zack Polanski when he ran to be Green Party Leader. Now he is the leader of the Greens, Hannah and Zack share a close, personal, professional relationship. Both are on the far left of the party, and so, policy-wise, they will have much in common.

So what does the future hold for Ms. Spencer? Hannah may rise and become a member of Zack's team. Given their left-wing views, I would say that's a certainty. However, this comes with a caveat Mr. Polanski has yet to be elected to parliament. Hannah is a young, intelligent woman with her head well screwed onto her shoulders.

Will she, like the colourful clothes she wears, have a bright future? Becoming the leader herself one day? One cannot obviously say what the future holds for Hannah; however, whatever happens, you cannot take away her tremendous victory in Gorton and Denton.
