Character Development
Redemption arcs are a common character device for writers to use in pretty much all genres of writing. Whether it be drama, fantasy or adventure there is sure to be a redemption arc for someone. Some are done not so well (Snape), and some are done very well. Those are the stories we are going to talk about. We know that I am very passionate about character driven stories and redemption arcs are a huge part of that. So here is a list of characters I think have the best character development of all time. Some of these aren’t necessarily redemption arcs but they do demonstrate incredible development and drastic positive changes.

Streaming Services
Streaming services have changed a lot about how television is both made and consumed. From shorter seasons, to harder renewals, streaming has its pros and cons. And though I still firmly believe that writers have more creative freedom and story quality is better overall with streaming services there are several things about the streaming model that need to be changed in order for working conditions for creatives to improve AND for consumer experience to be better. We are in an era where streaming services are struggling, they are bundling across owners and basically setting us back to cable anyway.

Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings
Okay we have now been watching Shang-Chi for a month and a half. There has been a drinking game that has been crafted and played and we have assessed the film’s comic book accuracy. We are doing our best to keep this journey interesting for ourselves. We are now doing a companion podcast where we are watching (or rewatching) all of the MCU movies. We will also have a guest soon and we’ve got a few other ideas that are going to keep everyone entertained for a while.

Ranking Characters
Gilmore Girls remains one of the most popular shows from the early 2000s. Its popularity sparks lots of internet discourse and there has been much discussion on the characters and their quality as people. So of course, as part of our regularly scheduled Gilmore Girls discussion we will be ranking the main characters of the show. By main characters I really just mean the Gilmores and anyone they’ve slept with. Perhaps we will do a second list with all of your Stars Hollow favorites but for now let’s keep it mainstream.

Sex and the City
Well we have clearly established that Carrie Bradshaw sucks and we will most certainly continue to talk about that. However we are also going to talk about the show itself. Now at the start of season 2 we find out from Charlotte that Big and Carrie dated for a year. The first season was only 12 episodes long and that year apparently lasted 5 of those episodes….that’s insane. This show is truly terrible at marking any passage of time and that takes away all emotional impact that any of these scenes may have.

9-1-1
So far the show is increasing in quality as we move through the seasons but the structural problems are most definitely still there. My biggest problem right now is that both season 2 and 3 have had really deep, emotional multi episode arcs that feel like they should end the season…but then they don’t and there are still several more episodes. The season finale then tries to shoehorn in something big at the end but it kind of robs the previous emotional arc of its impact. This problem roots in the fact that this show overuses multi-episode arcs. Like these writers have never heard of self contained stories. I am hoping that at some point in this series that horrible storytelling device goes away. We will see, at the end of season 3 Abby came back, but with a fiance. May graduates and starts working at the dispatch center and Maddy and Chim are having a baby!

Sex and the City
Women led media in the 90s and early 2000s was iconic and influential. And one of those influential pieces was Sex and the City. Though some of the content did not age well there are still so many relevant parts of this show. So we are going to take this season by season discussing the good, the bad and, of course, the influential.

MCU Rewatch
As a companion podcast to our An Idea of All Time podcast where we are starting off by watching Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings every week for 10 months, we have also decided to rewatch all of the current MCU movies in chronological order. We have now watched the first two Iron Man movies, because apparently we went from Iron Man 1 straight to Iron Man 2 and I think that was a poor decision for many reasons but lets go ahead and get into it.

9-1-1
Season 2 of 9-1-1 definitely found its footing. Season 1 was so shaky I definitely didn’t have much hope for it. But luckily it looks like in season 2 they stabilized their writers room, this absolutely improved the quality of the writing and the viewing experience as a whole. I am fully convinced that Buck is super gay and no one can convince me otherwise. I am in fact not crazy because tumblr has validated all of my feelings. Now if Eddie isn’t gay I will riot because that is insane. Those two have more romantic chemistry with each other then they have ever had with any woman they interact with on screen. The season finale of season 2 was weird and kind of shoehorned in but it did end with our couples getting a happy ending. Maddy and Chim get together and Athena and Bobby get married.

MCU Rewatch
As a companion series to An Idea of All Time my husband and I decided to rewatch all of the MCU movies in chronological order. This serves several purposes; 1) there is going to be a bit of an MCU drought for the next year as far as new releases go. 2) We want to properly place Shang-Chi in the MCU not just ranking it by quality but contextualizing it based on the existing universe. 3) We want to analyze how many of Shang-Chi’s problems are project specific and how many are MCU bred. So in addition to watching Shang-Chi every week we will be watching another MCU movie every week. We are of course starting with Iron Man.

Game of Thrones
It has been 5 years since we were subjected to the shit show that was season 8 of Game of Thrones and still fans are bitter. What could have gone down as one of the greatest shows of all time instead concluded as one of the worst. It is impossible to watch season 8 and think that anyone’s ending was acceptable. The writers did a great job of assassinating every single character…even the ones I hated. So we are going to go ahead and list every single thing wrong with season 8.

9-1-1
Season 1 of 9-1-1 is shaky at best. The show had no structure, no sense of organization, the character development was shoddy and none of the relationships were built up properly. Season 2 jumps right in and honestly the first episode of season 2 is about 1000X better then anything that was produced in season 1.
