The man from the mountain did not come down shining but that was how people told it later, after years had worn the terror smooth and made a lantern of him in memory. When I first saw him descending through the dusk, he looked like someone who had been pulled through the inside of a storm and returned only in part. Dust clung to the hollows of his face. His robe was split at the shoulder. His mouth moved once before sound came out as if speech had been thinned by the height and had not yet thickened again in the air below; still the people surged toward him. They always did when fear and hope wore the same face.

The Color Line Within the Color Line
Colorism is often described as a preference for lighter skin within communities of color. Yet this definition, while accurate, is incomplete. Colorism is not merely an aesthetic bias or cultural quirk. It is a social technology one that developed within colonial and racial hierarchies to maintain systems of white supremacy without constant direct enforcement. At its core, colorism is a structure that rewards proximity to whiteness and punishes distance from it. It operates through psychological conditioning, social incentives, and internalized hierarchies. Over time, it becomes self-sustaining: communities begin to reproduce the same divisions that were originally imposed upon them.

There is a growing anxiety surrounding artificial intelligence that feels both familiar and misplaced. Everywhere you look people are panicking about Ai “talking to itself,” replacing workers, making decisions humans shouldn’t relinquish, or eventually turning against us. The fear is louder than Skynet, theatrical, and often deeply emotional but when you listen closely; it becomes clear that much of this fear is not actually about Ai at all. It is about power, control, trust, and a long history of human systems failing the very people they were supposed to protect.
