'The Height of the Storm'
Robert Massimi. Plays about old age can vary significantly; from Waverly Gallery to On Golden Pond, it can be sad, humorous, devastating, or confusing. With great acting in in this play, it is still the latter that is The Height Of The Storm. The audience is never sure what is going on throughout the performance. We grapple with the death of either the husband Andre (Johnathan Pryce), or his wife Madeline (Eileen Atkins). Never sure where the show will take us, we watch these two legends perform magnificently.

'Boogieban'
Robert Massimi. Boogieban is a play that tugs at your heart in many respects... the play lays out the horrors of war, its victims and the after-effects of being in war. We first meet Lt. Col. Lawrence Caplan (David Peacock); he is a Military Psychologist with all the degrees and polish to go with his rank and profession. His twenty-five years as a man serving his fellow soldiers is about to come to an end in a week. Caplan has one more patient to see before he retires, and he must determine if this young man is fit to go back into combat.

'LULU XX'
Robert Massimi In a very creative, very well-played show, LULU XX IS ONE of the best staged plays I have seen in a long time. This avant-garde play was marvelously set up to put the actor above the audience. Slanted upward, Erika Latta looked like a giant onstage. Regal, this woman was head and shoulders above the audience and she commanded her role

'In the Heights'
Robert Massimi. In The Heights is a story about a young man who sees his neighbor (Washington Heights) in the course of three days. First appearing on Broadway at The Richard Rodgers Theater, In The Heights is a light, warm story with great songs and superb dancing.

'Betrayal'
Robert Massimi. Betrayal is a deep, wordy, thinking-person's play, with both great acting and staging. At the Jacobs Theatre, the audience is treated to three really great actors of the day, and one great writer... Harold Pinter. The play's genre is one of edginess—a noir, if you will—set forth with deft lighting and direction.

'A White Man's Guide to Rikers Island'
A White Man's Guide To Rikers Island is an informative play about the jail itself, from what it is like to be incarcerated there to the history of the prison. Based on a true story, we learn about playwright Richard Roy and his life. Roy is played by a fine actor, Connor Chase Stewart. Roy grew up in Sparta, New Jersey, and had many opportunities in his life. He went from boxing to acting, both very easily and very fast. He was enjoying success, acting in Shakespeare In The Park while doing Guiding Light during the day.

'The Two Character Play'
Robert Massimi. The Two Character Play at the 13th St. Theater is a play by Tennessee Williams that was very near and dear to the playwright. Williams often said that he liked both the layers and the different nuances to this body of work. Although it was initially not well received, this work has played over the years with more recognition than when originally produced.

'No One Is Forgotten'
Robert Massimi. No One Is Forgotten is an edgy play that deals with woman in jail; it looks at two woman living in "squall-er" (I am presuming in Saudi Arabia, but not sure). The two woman deal with their horrific life behind bars the best way that they can; they make jokes, play trivia and other means to get by. Although it is not made clear that they are activists, the audience can assume it by where the two talk about where they have been in the world—who goes to the Congo or Liberia unless they have to?

'God Shows Up'
Robert Massimi. It seems the heatwave is too much for theaters; thinking I was reviewing I Spy A Spy, I ended up at The Actors Temple instead to see God Shows Up because the St. Clemente Theater had no air conditioning and had to cancel the show.

'The Penal Colony'
Robert Massimi. The Penal Colony is an interpretation of Kafka's The Penal Colony. From Kafka, it is a novella about three men; the traveler, the soldier, and the condemned man set to be executed. In the book, the traveler is invited to witness the execution of a soldier who disobeys his superior. Out of politeness, the traveler agrees to come along to a small valley that is closed off on both sides. With only the three present for the execution, the soldier goes through the apparatus that will eventually kill the man in question. It is cold and calculating how the soldier goes about it, almost relishing the other man's death.
