Like A Heartbeat
I don’t like silence. Quiet tends to invite chaos, and it often feels too much like the calm before the storm. If possible, I like to saturate every moment of my day with music. Music is unique in that it can appeal to millions of people and still feel deeply personal, and its way of both inducing and relieving pain is fascinating in and of itself. It has a rare and magical quality that you won’t quite find anywhere else. If you’re anything like me, you go to sleep with your earbuds plugged in, leave your playlist on while you shower, and spend every car ride caught up in bopping melodies. In honor of those who feel the same way, and especially for those who need to de-stress, I’d like to present a playlist of mine that is dedicated to relaxing.

From Passion to Playlist
My love for the piano has been blossoming for most of my 24 year-old life. I took lessons as a child, but disliked it. It was yet another thing that my parents had forced me into. But somewhere along the way, I noticed that wanting to practice didn't feel like such an insurmountable task. The harder I worked, the better the result. Eventually my passion was ignited. I couldn't get enough of piano music. As I got older, the lessons may have stopped, but that didn't stop me. I continued to teach myself, to expand my knowledge. My skill grew each year. and then once I graduated high school I knew that a degree in music was my destiny. I enrolled in the school of music at Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne. Receiving professional instruction, my love for the piano exploded like fireworks. I spent hours every day practicing, sharpening my craft.

Meditate with Depeche Mode
Depeche Mode have over 200 songs catalogued through 17 albums. Their sound has changed through time, but their electronic base and funky tunes remain as relevant and catchy as they were back in the day. Many know the greatness of their early work with hits like Just Can’t Get Enough, People Are People and Enjoy The Silence. Whatever your favourite era of the band is, there’s no doubt the band have produced a handful of masterful songs. When I saw Vocal’s challenge to produce a Zen playlist and write about it, the first thing that came to mind was Depeche Mode.

A Warrior's Path
As an avid fan of Hip-Hop and Old School R & B, those are normally my go to genres when it comes to music. Although as a writer and a thinker most of the time the preference to center my zen comes in the form of film scores or instrumentals. We live in a world where there are so many distractions and unwanted noise that a time for just sitting still and allowing the space for composers and instruments to tell a story without words can be peaceful and soothing.

The Death Story Playlist
I’m a writer; I love story. So when I think of a playlist, I love songs that have stories in them. And when I look for a playlist that, during COVID, helps me to relax, and realize that things really could be worse--I like a playlist of songs that include stories of death.

A Whole Made of Pieces
Music for me has always been a place of refuge, where the melodic tones can soothe my mind and provide a calm harbor in the tumultuous waters of life. I am sharing a playlist that is a port of call for when I need to reset, restore, and remember what really matters. The songs of A Whole Made of Pieces may stir up memories and a sense of self and purpose, or simply take me to a slower tempo and more harmonious state of mind:
