April 22nd Eldren boarded the ’ship to be greeted by the captain. She was tall and imposing, bald, with rich umber skin and dark eyes. She was wearing a dark blue captain’s coat over a white shirt and black pants. A bandolier holding a spell cannon and cartridges across her chest, and had a cutlass strapped to her waist.

Moon Jellies
"It was a realm of liquid opal — a place of both dreams and nightmares. It was haunting and beautiful, where Moon Jellies danced like spectral ethers. Their iridescent bodies cast a mesmerizing and otherworldly light of which illuminated the ocean's depths. They moved with the grace of celestial beings, their translucent bells pulsing rhythmically with each movement."

Taking Living > Life For Granted
"Do you think life is taken for granted?" A small voice asked. Irellis was a small Fey who was often much smaller than the rest. Her starlight silver hair was wild with curls and her little cotton dress made her look like a tiny snowflake. She lay with her arms folded on a young woman's shoulder, staring out into the world that was designed on a scale too big for her.

Orso would send the summons when he was ready, so Eldren busied himself looking at the clockwork heart he had found. The heart was exquisitely crafted, resembling an anatomical heart fashioned from gears and other small parts. It also looked like it opened, judging by a small seam that ran the entire length of it. Getting it to release its secrets wasn’t as hard as he expected. As he turned it over in his hands, he thumbed something, and the gears started spinning. There was a bright flash of light as it opened. He watched in wonder as it revealed a crystal with a caterpillar inside it. Eldren reached in and marveled at the object. It looked like a Hellgem, but it was no kind of Hellgem he had ever seen. He wondered if it was special. Hellgems weren’t all that rare, but they harbored the energy of dead malignant spirits. Temple had sent him and Phae out with them once or twice before, for a boost of power. But this one was different. The energy was subtle but powerful and holding the ’gem eased some of the strain of the life he’d had.

Phaedra was quiet during her watch. At twelve, she didn’t know what she was supposed to be looking out for. Still, it had seemed like a good idea for them to take turns looking out for danger while the others slept. She glanced over her shoulder at Demeter, fast asleep next to the banked campfire they had built to cook a small dinner. Eldren had supplied the tools that were helping to keep them fed, and Phaedra hated everyone enjoyed that but ostracized him.

Eldren shuddered as he ran, hoping Phaedra hadn’t been grandstanding. All he could do was hope for the best as he careened down the halls, the lantern he pilfered from the supply bags at the entrance bobbing an erratic rhythm.

See the Light Chapter 2 Song for the Souls Part 3
Chapter 2 Song for the Souls Part 3 Horses. I had no idea how to ride one. The thought of trying and possibly killing myself within the first ten meters crossed my mind. No, that was definitely not an option. Instead, I quickly walked through the stables, taking in the sight of the magnificent animals. Their coats gleamed, their manes long and silky. Their eyes were large and glistened with a calm, peaceful intelligence.

It was supposed to be Demeter. She wasn’t supposed to die. Demeter was supposed to save the world. The prophecy machine chose her. Instead, they killed her, dragged her corpse off, and left Phaedra to defend a place that was going to fall no matter what anyone did.

Eldren didn’t have time to waste, so he rushed down the hall. It was more crowded than normal, with people fleeing toward the ’dock, and a part of him wished he could grab Phae and escape with the others. But Phae was in an unwinnable situation. A request from Aurelius was bad news. Temple was the only force that stood a chance against the necromancer, but even Temple could only do so much against him. The cities that had a Temple were usually spared, but the Temple fleets that protected the non-Temple areas had more limited choices. Rumors on why Aurelius was trying to kill every living person had borne no fruit. In the two centuries since he had come into power, nation after nation had crumbled under his onslaught.
