The MLS is a league in the ascendancy. That cannot be questioned. A mere 25 years ago the top flight of US soccer was founded following a successfully held 1994 World Cup in the United States. But six years on from that the league was sputtering and clinging on by a thread. Teams were folding or desperately hanging on to life. Interest waned until the United States Men’s National team made a deep run in the 2002 World Cup which reignited interest among a fan base that was long on the decline.

Juventus Finally get back to winning ways
Matthijs de Ligt was the unlikely candidate, who scored the winning goal in the midweek Serie A encounter between Spezia and Juventus on Wednesday evening. An incredibly open encounter had Janis Antiste score the second goal of the match for Spezia, just after the second half began. With the score 2–1 to Thiago Motta’s side, it looked as though Juventus were continuing this season’s sequence of scoring first and dropping points in league games. They had scored first in three of their previous four Serie A matches this season and only collected two points in the process.

It was nowhere near the evening that Barcelona fans had dreamt of as they made their way to the Camp Nou on Tuesday evening for their first game of the new Champions League season. Their last meeting with the German giants had ended 8-2 and there were some that were optimistic that Ronald Koeman and his side could turn things around. The optimism soon turned to despair. A fortunate goal from Thomas Müller in the first half, was followed up by two goals from Robert Lewandowski, as Bayern Munich dominated a one-sided affair. The revenge that Barcelona fans had been hoping for would not come to fruition, if anything this result evoked more questions.
