After seeing some of the best horror movies of 2017, it's about time to branch out and find new horizons when it comes to discovering truly enriching psychological horrors. Not all of the best horrors can be found on the silver screen; in fact most of the scariest and terrifying films are short, in nature. Just take a look at this three-minute horror Tired, or even the 2013 short film hit Slasher! Being an avid horror fan myself, I am acutely aware of how rare it is these days to come across a horror film that actually satisfies my need for terror, shock and gore. Especially in mainstream cinema there seems to be a lot of repetition when it comes to storyline, average acting skills and predictable outcomes. However, there have been a fair few films that have stayed with me long after viewing for all the right reasons. Inventive and creative directing, unusual characters and truly terrifying situations make these 5 films some of the best horror films in recent times.

Memory Lane with the 'Insidious' Franchise
There is something about the 'Insidious' franchise that is ridiculously entertaining even though they can be extreme and over-the-top a lot of the time. However, I can honestly say that I’m guilty of not only seeing all the 'Insidious' films in theaters, but purchasing them as well. For example, I will be seeing Insidious: The Last Key in theaters and, once it’s out on DVD, I will be buying it as well. Now, because the new 'Insidious' has recently been released, I thought I’d go down memory lane when it comes to the franchise. I wanted to start with the beginning, the original, the first 'Insidious' film.

Never Let Go
“Never let me go” were the last words I heard before I woke. Never Let Go I opened my eyes to stare at the ceiling. I knew whose voice spoke the words and that was why my heart felt so hollow. It had been mere months since her death and each day it became harder to carry on. I couldn’t even bring myself to leave the town and each night was rewarded with painful memories. The painful part being that they reminded me that I could never see her again. My eyes began to water and I blinked several times, fighting back the tears. In this new world, crying was a sign of weakness.

Near Death
I stare at the ceiling and rub my face. I can't seem to fall asleep but now it is time for me to get up, so I roll on my side and see my beautiful wife laying next to me. Her face is peaceful, serene, as she snores lightly into oblivion. I roll up onto my side, and stare down at her lithe figure. I lean down and kiss her forehead. She rustles but doesn't wake, and I quietly step out of bed.

Bride of the Baykok
The flowers danced in the prairie meadow and the surrounding trees reaches and stretched their arms toward the sky as I walked toward camp with my basket of berries and nuts I had gathered for Old Mother. The summer wind played with my braids and I giggled as my loose baby hairs tickled at my neck. I sucked in a great deep breath of air. The bouquet of the nearby river, flowers, berries, the sun and the prairie grass was beautiful. The birds make happy music and I have even spotted mother deer and a fawn. It was all beautiful, I love summer.

Her teeth pressed into the skin of her lips as she took her seat upon the darkened throne. Her heartbeat raced and her muscles were tense with excitement. She was wound up and ready to launch. Blackened hair with streaks of crimson fell over her shoulders, framing her physique. She was a queen and to be one meant to look like one. The look in her eyes shifted from eager to power hungry. Desire gripped her body and she refused to be denied what she wanted. Aged blood coursed through her veins and she knew she needed more. Soon what she had would dry up and be no more useful than a dead worm. She knew what she needed but first... she’d get what she wanted.
