Different is a curse given only to those who are meant to bring about change on this planet, however, it is up to them to accept it. It is not a task for the faint of heart to challenge the social norms in which we allow ourselves to be imprisoned. Sadly, this is a statement that is amplified amongst people of color. Javontay Baynes, otherwise known as Spiritual So is a living example of this concept. Even so, he challenged me to carve my own path rather than follow one that is already paved. Such inspiration is hard to come by in the black community.

I Gave Up Social Media for 30 Days
Whether we are aware of it or not, social media has become a key component of our lives. It fills the gaps in activity throughout the workday and multiple hours in the evenings; the typical American spends an average of 123 minutes, or 2 hours and 3 minutes, on social media sites per day. This statistic is astounding because so many people, myself included, complain of not having enough free time during the week. Think about it, if we cut out social media, we would gain an average of 861 minutes of free time per week. It was upon realizing this that I resolved to cut social media out of my life for 30 days. The results were surprising and amazing as I was better focused, more grateful, and more connected to myself and my surroundings.

The Filtered Life
In the age of photography studios at our fingertips, life becomes a façade. What we see isn’t always reality. Life is photoshopped. We see everyone and everything through a filtered screen. All of life’s little blemishes are smoothed out. Exposure is added to things that need not be exposed! Contrast runs rampant when we compare our lives to everyone else and feel we don’t measure up. After all, we aren’t traveling the world as a photographer and getting thousands of followers on Instagram. Bloggers are overexposed, spouting off their opinions as facts. Algorithms highlight what the powers that be deem important and shadow what they wish to suppress. So many filters are put on life that it is hard to remember what the original actually looks like.

A New Diet
I started a new diet at the beginning of the year. At first, I was just going to hold myself to two weeks. The changes required great self-control and conscious decisions about what to imbibe. Though it started out difficult, it has become easier to adhere to as I feel the results. I am happier, less stressed, have more time for myself and my family. Perhaps we should begin there, with my family and why I felt the need to improve my diet.

5 Reasons To Take A Break From Social Media.
On January 25th I made the decision, (that I had been building up to for a while,) to deactivate my Facebook and Instagram accounts. I came to finally make this decision partly out of frustration. I was struggling to finish reading an academic paper for my cultural studies class and had temporarily given up. My focus was shot. I went out for a walk with my dog in the cold winters evening to get some fresh air and clear my head. I knew why I was having trouble focusing. It is hard to focus with all the mental noise that follows a few hours of scrolling through social media feeds. On that walk I made a promise to myself to stay off all social media until May 1st. I arrived home and immediately went on and deactivated my accounts.

It’s Time To Stop Watching Other People’s Lives
I am guilty of spending too much time on social media watching other people live their lives! I don’t know about you, but I find it too easy to get sucked into the reality stream of social media. I then find myself dreaming about living their lives, having their lovely houses, cars or wardrobes and then when I finally pull myself away from it all. I am left feeling deflated and flat, and even sad.

How YouTube Broke Me Out Of My Shell

And in college, I found creators like Caitlin Shoemaker and Maddie Lymburner whose videos taught me about veganism and helped make the lifestyle transition a little easier.
