Maple My Cereal Box Prize
Maple My Cereal Box Dog She poked her nose out of a cereal box and I fell in love A two ton yellow garbage truck showed up for collection in the parking lot of our elementary school. I was assigned to be the coordinator to collect cereal boxes for the first post consumer waste in Cincinnati. It was an experiment and I had to get the job done. People from far and wide came with their prized empty cereal boxes, and the volunteers and I corralled them toward the back of the truck. Pretty soon after three hours of collection, pounds of the pre post-consumer material filled the mammoth lemon color vehicle. Don't ask how I fell out of the truck.

How My Dog Saved My Life
Freshly twenty-two and moving into a new apartment, I was coming to terms with a lot of traumas. Though I’d always had some nagging thoughts about my father, I went to therapy as an adult for the first time and came to realize that he was a narcissist, and I was coming to terms with the fact that I had witnessed so much abuse and toxicity as a child. On top of that I was dealing with the aftermath of an awkward breakup with my boyfriend of the last four years, my mother had been diagnosed with Stage three breast cancer the year before, divorced my dad, and I was dealing with delayed healing from a sexual assault that occurred when I was eighteen. To say that I was a mess would have been the understatement of the century.

For Dogs Unleashed
My psychic failed to predict any of this. But, I’m ok with it. Thinking I may tip her extra for the flaw. It was just a few months after the Covid lockdown. NYC. I was adjusting to the so called, “new normal”. I had become very practiced at spending time indoors. Even had begun to enjoy the Tik Toks, the Zoom birthdays, and lots of Netflix movies with my 13 year old chihuahua, Barney. A wise, seasoned gentleman (who I’ve always imagined would hold a glass of scotch whilst dangling a cigarette and judging others, with a French accent, of course!)

Who Adopted Who?
I was just going to look at the puppies. I wasn't going to adopt I told myself. I had just lost Daisy and it had shattered me. She was a pug-shitzu mix. I had loved her dearly. I still had Taffy and she was so old. I was worried she might pass soon as well. I would be alone in a dogless home. I had Daisy for 16 years and Taffy for 15 years. They had both been through moves, losses and a great deal of life with me.

Dogs to the Rescue
It was a rainy Monday afternoon back in March 2020, when the Covid-19 lockdown had just started in Spain. The timing of this story is important since the Spanish government had just passed their tough restrictions, where you could not leave your house unless it was for work, shopping, or walking the dogs. Living by the seaside in a very small town meant that when you were going for walks, you would rarely see another human being. I would also try very hard to avoid doing so, which is why that afternoon I took the very rocky path near the cliffs of Cabo de Palos.

Muzzled
It had been nearly two weeks since I had driven the three hours and twelve minutes to Stray Haven Rescue in Upstate New York to pick up my new soulmate. I'd seen her on Petfinder and had my very first experience with love at first sight. I needed this dog. Not much was known about her history; Stray Haven had rescued her from a high kill shelter in North Carolina and she was estimated to be a year and a half old. Also, she had been adopted by a family and returned for biting a kid. Okay, she has a bite history, definitely something to watch for. But still, I needed to meet her.
