Our guide to animal adoption; learn why, where, and how to prepare to adopt a cat, kitten, dog or puppy from an animal shelter or rescue group.
Who Saved Whom
I start each day with this large, hairy guy on my chest looking at me expectantly, and sometimes licking me, to wake me up. "Are you going to lay there wasting this beautiful day?" he seems to say. He won't let me. If I don't get up, he uses his paws to drag the covers off of me, despite any protestations. I generally do not like being rousted from my slumbers, but I cannot resist this guy.

Hoppin’ Happy Hares
When my daughter, Kilee, was fifteen she moved in with me. She had never been allowed to have a pet of any kind. After researching and reading about different pets we sat and did some talking. That’s when she decided she wanted to get a bunny. I agreed to let her have one. It took her about a week and a half of babysitting to save all of the money she estimated needing.

Boy
This story is not about me, but my Grandparents. “It’s time to feed the dogs again.” Grandmother calls from the kitchen as she is cooking us grits and bacon. At six in the morning, I trudge out of bed, grab the bagged food scraps from the counter, and walk to the back door to see Susy and Boy, our dogs, awaiting for the food to arrive.

Bonding of the Bear and the Bull. Top Story - March 2021.
I knew I wanted to adopt a dog, but I did not think I would be adopting from, of all places, Overstock.com. In 2014 they partnered with local adoption agencies where I found this adorable picture at my local animal shelter.

From Heartbreak to New Beginnings
It was the end of March 2020. We were just beginning to grasp the extent of the pandemic that was causing havoc across the globe and our little world was about to implode in a different way. We had come to realise that it was time to accept the inevitable: we had to let our almost 18-year-old, much-loved tortoiseshell cat, Tabitha, go to pussycat heaven. It was heartbreaking. I didn’t know how I was going to manage without her.

Pugsly the Pure
The tale of Pugsly begins a little over six years ago. My daughter, Kilee, had recently moved to Arizona and begun to make friends. After a month or so Kilee had become best friends with a girl named Nikki. The two were together all of the time. One night while staying over Nikki said that she was trying to find a place to stay but it was hard because her dog (Arie) was pregnant. After talking with my roommate we decided that Nikki and Arie could stay with us for a while.

Her Name Was . . . Dropspin?
Sitting at home alone while my boyfriend was off on long work trips, I decided that our house needed a four-legged family member. I should bite my tongue for saying that a gay man can watch the Golden Girls only so much before needing the vacancy on the sofa beside him filled, but that’s where I was in my head. However, not since my teen years had I cared for a pet in any of the places that I lived, and the more I considered it the more I longed for a furry buddy.

Rescued the Rescuer
I have always been the rescuer of animals. It started with the feral kittens at a barn in the town I lived in. My mom, when asked if I could bring a kitten home, would always say no until the day I brought one of the kittens home from the barn and I learned that if I didn’t ask and just came home with the cute bundle of fur, she would acquiesce. I hated to see hurting, picked on animals and people. I related to them so much as I had dealt with bullying and sexual abuse at young ages. I knew that if I were these animals, in these situations, I would want to be rescued too. In fact, I did want to be rescued and the animals were always such a balm to my broken soul.

Team Coco: A Dog Worth the Wait
I waited for him. I adopted “Coco” when I was living in South Bend, Indiana back in 2017. I had just got my first full-time job, but I did not know anyone in the city. Growing up, my family always had dogs and dogs have always given me a sense of purpose. Being alone, with no friends or family, I was depressed. Somehow, I knew the cure; even if a dog could not solve all my problems, he would help.
