Spread Too Thin

The Challenge Of Being Human In A World That Needs Help

By Dr. Cody Dakota Wooten, DFM, DHM, DAS (hc)Published about 7 hours ago 3 min read

Written by a human, for humans, always.

There is a lot that is happening in the world.

And often it seems...

There are not enough people who are contributing.

It happens for a variety of reasons...

Some good...

Others not so much.

Sometimes it is from exhaustion...

A lack of hope...

Pain and trials...

Selfishness...

Yet, when fewer people contribute...

It does not mean that there is less to do.

For those who do their best to contribute...

It can be really difficult.

They find themselves in a predicament...

Seeing that there is so much that needs to be done in the world...

But not enough individuals to do it all.

What is the contributor to do?

Either they can stay in their own lane...

And watch as other things are left undone...

Or...

They try to contribute to as much as they are capable of.

However...

This can become a double-edged sword.

If you contribute to more...

Others may feel that they do not need to contribute because it is already being handled.

If you contribute to more...

You may burn through your energy stores far too quickly...

Being unable to refill them.

You become spread too thin.

Then...

You fail to contribute to different things well...

Or at all.

You become pushed into situations where there are no good outcomes...

Only bad or worse.

You can become ineffective at everything...

Or you can completely drop certain things.

But in either case...

You are to blame for the fallout.

Some people will try to justify their position...

Make themselves right in the eyes of others...

And those others may even give them the benefit of agreeing with their position...

But the responsibility and failure still rests on their shoulders.

There is a weight that comes both with the responsibility and failure...

And it can be overwhelming.

This is especially true when certain things mean a lot to others...

And yourself.

What will you do in the face of that failure?

Knowing that you took the responsibility...

But failed to live up to the hopes and dreams of that responsibility?

There is the age-old saying...

That we are human.

That we have limits.

That sometimes, we simply will fail.

That it happens to all of us.

These are all true...

Yet, within the crash of the failure, it feels...

Hollow.

It does not fill in the feelings of loss and despair that come from the failure.

The pain is still there...

The disillusionment...

Coming face-to-face with the reality of your own brokenness.

It is all the worse when you truly thought you could...

You believed in yourself...

You saw the vision of a better future...

And you tried to do right.

That sorrow is excruciating.

It is a risk that we sign up for, often unknowingly or unrealizing, when we spread ourselves too thin.

Is it right to try anyway?

Or should we allow certain things to remain undone and firmly stay within our limits?

There are no real right or wrong answers to these questions.

They are something that we should consider, though...

Try to think about the fallout beforehand instead of in the aftermath.

Try to consider what the consequences will be...

Not to put you in fear...

But to try to get as accurate a picture as possible.

It is difficult to try to consider both our own limitations and the list of what needs to be done in the world around us.

To the best of your ability...

Ask if you are spread too thin.
