Filthy Cities – Industrial New York
New York City. “The Capital of the World” to some, “The City So Nice They Named It Twice” to others, but most importantly, the city people escape to in hopes of pursuing the American Dream. However, back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, New York City was not as upstanding or charming as it is today. The documentary Filthy Cities: Industrial New York by Andy Robbins, produced by BBC, portrays the struggles poor immigrants faced when arriving in New York City. Fleeing persecution and poverty in their previous countries, what they faced in NYC was even worse. From money-grubbing landlords, repulsive slums, and cramped tenements, immigrants had to fight disease, corruption, exploitation, parasites, and many more grueling conditions. It is appalling, the nightmarish circumstances the immigrants desperately tried to withstand, with many of them not making it out alive. For New York to continue as a city, various people, like inventors and reformers, would have to step up with inventions, ideas, and reformation.

Day in Salem
My film studies professor told us about an exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum called "It’s Alive," which features posters and props from classic horror and sci-fi films. It piqued my interest and so Jasmine and I decided that we would go downtown today since my only class was canceled and Jasmine did not have class until 3:05.

Beyond Michigan: Part 1
4/21 11 AM It was a longer drive yesterday than expected. I had a mental schedule which I needed to follow. We drove from Utah through Colorado into my hometown in Wyoming. I was now four days into a cross country roadtrip with my roommate from a ski town in the high Sierras.

Universal
I believe that there is a difference between a house and a home. While not everybody may have a house, I feel that everybody has a home. A place where you feel most like yourself. Your safe place to go where you don't have to worry about anything. A place where you can let go of everything and just live. You're free here and the emotions you experience from being there make you feel like you can do anything. You can overcome fears or do something you never thought you would. Do things you love doing over and over again. A place where you can say, “This is where I'm supposed to be” and not doubt it for a second. Somewhere that has made such a big impact on your life. A place so close to your heart that its coordinates are stamped onto your jewelry.

Most people get the travel bug from lush beaches, week-long treks in the Outback, historical excursions in Europe — you get the idea. Brooklyn Girl vs. Seattle Life!
Shout out to my best friend Valencia Joseph for giving me the idea for this blog... wait... let me explain a bit. You see, every morning as I go to work I find/bump into things that are very Seattle-like, aka things that you would only see/experience while living in Seattle. When I come across something of this nature, I gladly share it with Valencia via an app on our phones called Marco Polo. What is this Marco Polo app you say? It's a free video chat app that you can use to send video messages to whomever your connected to on there; it's really cool too because as you're recording a video, the person you're sending it to can watch it as you're recording it so it's sort of like FaceTime, but not really. I love it and Valencia does too, as a matter of fact, Valencia prefers it to texting but I could care less either way. The point is that the other day I was sharing one of my many ONLY IN SEATTLE moments with Valencia when she says, "Yo, you need to make a video series called Brooklyn girl in Seattle because you be dealing with some shit that's just... crazy... and the way you describe shit and make comments about shit, people would be literally on the floor cracking up over that shit! You definitely would get a lot of people watching!"

Love to Travel? Don't Live in the Midwest, U.S.A.
The Midwest of the United States is gorgeous. There's rolling hills, green and gold fields, and you can see for miles around. We have attractions like Chicago, the Badlands, and Mount Rushmore. Other than that, though, we're pretty lacking in excitement.

Things I Miss about America
It’s too easy to look at what’s happening in the land of my birth right now and breathe a sigh of relief that there is an ocean between me and all the vileness. Rumours of sharks swimming up freeways in the flooding after Hurricane Harvey. Actual Nazis who are not ashamed to show their faces while perpetrating violence. The grim spectre of impending nuclear winter. In my eleven years living in the UK I've seen both countries change in ways that seem so unthinkable I began to wonder whether we've slipped into a parallel dimension. Yet for all the woes Britain is currently experiencing, it seems for the time being to be the lesser of two evils.
