A Milestone: 100 Stories On Vocal
I’m excited to announce that with my latest poem, Winter, Her Protector, I’ve officially posted 100 stories on Vocal! If this is your first time seeing me, hi! I’m Jaye, and I’ve been a creator on Vocal for almost 6 years now! I write a little bit of everything, from creative nonfiction, to poetry, to the occasional short fiction story. And I write about a pretty wide range of things like music, food, grief and loss, and plenty of personal stories and nature poetry.

The Night I Found Myself Again
It was past midnight, the kind when the world seems paused, and even your thoughts whisper softly. I sat alone in my small room, staring at the dim light of my screen, feeling the weight of everything I had carried for years. The quiet was comforting but also unsettling, like staring into the depths of my own mind and realizing just how far I had drifted from the person I wanted to be.

The Voice Refined Through Another Medium
For centuries, words have been the vessels of human thought, the means by which understanding passes from one heart to another. From quills and typewriters to keyboards and screens, the tools have changed, but the mind behind the message has not. Now, in the age of artificial intelligence, some claim that words refined through its assistance cannot be fully human. They say that if an essay or reflection has been shaped, polished, or expanded by an AI tool, then its authenticity is somehow diminished. Yet that belief mistakes process for purpose. The truth of writing does not depend on how the words are arranged, but on who the words come from.

Izzy's Hair
In March of 2019, my daughter Izabella turned five. She had one wish for her birthday that I thought might be a little bit out of reach for such a young girl. She wanted pink hair. Not extensions. Not clip ins. She wanted to dye it. After a while, we decided to look into safe dyes and allowed her to go ahead and get some pink dye. We got everything ready and an hour later, our baby had pink hair.

He Always Wants to Go Home!. Top Story - November 2025.
The challenge ended and I am sending the tips out to the stories I liked, which is every one of them. I was completely blown away by this collective creativity and the different takes the authors provided on the prompt.

A Discovery in a Bus Shelter. Top Story - November 2025.
I met my first publisher at a bus stop. Yes, I am as busy with the challenges as any of you out there in Vocalland. I have also had more contracts added to my teaching schedule, papers marked and to come on the docket, and I think I may have beaten back a slight cold that set up shop at the back of my head and on my chest. I know that I should rest and restore myself to better shape so that I can keep tapping out these pieces. But I feel compelled to talk about a man who changed my plans for my literary career, especially since I did not think I had one.

“I Found My Voice Between Drafts”
I Found My Voice Between Drafts By [Ali Rehman] For years, I thought writing was about perfection. About crafting the perfect first sentence, choosing the perfect words, and telling the perfect story that would make everyone stop and listen.
