Marla Adams and Max Gail win Best Supporting Daytime Emmy's
Veteran actors Max Gail and Marla Adams warmed the hearts of soap viewers on their respective daytime dramas. Fans were so touched by their portrayals of living in the last stages of dementia that they began saying the two should win Emmys. On Friday night June 25 both were honored with the award for the Outstanding Performance by a supporting actor/actress in a supporting role. Gail, 78 was on hand to take the stage and accept his trophy while 82 year old Adams spoke to the audience via live stream. To say these two were outstanding is actually an understatement.

I became Cinderella in more ways than one
I grew up reading fairytales and loved them all. I had individual books as well as big storybooks with lots of bedtime stories in them. I also would check out items from the school library and spend all my spare time reading and fantasizing. One of my favorite fairytales is the saga of Cinderella. In addition to the books, I love watching the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that came on television once a year during the 1960s as well as the DISNEY cartoon version. I have also read the darker Grimm brothers' adaptation titled Aschenputel.

My brief association with Denise Matthews AKA Vanity
Prince and Vanity Today I went to the library for the first time since it reopened due to COVID. I checked out the book "Prince the Beautiful Ones" by Dan Piepenbring. When I read where the author mentioned that Prince was distraught at the death of Denise Matthews AKA Vanity it brought back a memory. Vanity was the lead singer of the girl group Vanity 6 until shortly before the movie PURPLE RAIN was to be shot.

Solving puzzles and playing word games brings inner peace
Over the years I have enjoyed working on crossword puzzles and doing word searches. I’ve also found peace and contentment by playing Solitaire on my phone. I have noticed during the past few years that such activities help me focus and gives me a sense of inner peace. I have also taken notice that when I check my blood pressure after such activities that it is always significantly lower than before. I love choosing a word and then trying to find as many other words from the letters as possible. For example, I will use the word Christmas.

The Boys: Where they are now
Where are they now is a common question regarding musical acts of days gone by. During the late 1980s teenage girls were singing and dancing to the sound of THE BOYS who were similar to a young NEW EDITION. The four singing siblings even sang their hit recording Crazy on an episode in the fifth season of the NBC sitcom A DIFFERENT WORLD. They portrayed a group called Mice to Men which was a play on the hip hop group Boyz 2 Men. The brothers Tajh, BiLal, Khiry, and Hakeem Abdulsamad, made up the group and freely dished on what they thought about each other.

Grief 101: Standing alone
I am so thankful that Vocal has a category for grief because it enables me to write what I am feeling in order to assist others. As I have said in previous articles, I have dealt with grief, funerals, and cemeteries since age 5. I recall standing in the church cemetery when Great Great uncle Jim was buried. I remember when my cousins had their great grandpa's body in the house the night before the funeral and they cried so loud I could hear them at my home which was about a half block away through a field. As a teen, I sang with the church choir during funerals and went through the traditional motions when people died.

Muckrakers the super heroes of journalism
Muckrakers were investigative reporters and writers during what is known as the Progressive Era which lasted from 1890–1920. These individuals wrote about injustice and corruption in order to bring much needed changes in society. You could call them whistleblowers who published articles in magazines like Cosmopolitan and McClure's and also in books. The January 1903 issue of McClure's is considered to be the official debut for muckraking journalism.
