The Bourdain Effect
Today, I learned about the passing of Anthony Bourdain. I didn’t know him personally. I’m not going to gush about what a great guy he was and how unbelievably sad his passing is. I knew his TV personality. Undoubtedly, it contained at least some trace of the real man, but I can’t attest to that. And yes, it is unbelievably tragic. The same could be said for any life that is lost, no matter the circumstances. These sentiments aren’t new or unique. I can’t offer a glimpse into the mind or life of a man I’d never met and now, sadly never will. What I can do is explain how his life and what I was exposed to through him has changed me. How his shows changed my entire way of thinking about food and culture, and the way they are intertwined.

And today I'm going to give you a little peak at the list. You may find something on the list that makes a perfect wedding gift or maybe would just be a great addition to your home!

How to Make a Baklava, From the Betty Crocker International Cookbook
Baklava is really assembly required. Filo pastry is the key ingredient. You also need walnuts, almonds, and pecans. First, you prepare the honey syrup with mixing the nuts, although I forgot the spices. I didn’t even brush the pan with margarine. Oops. Big mistakes I will not make the second time around. One package filo pastry—and as you unfold the filo leaves, you put a damp towel to prevent drying, which I also didn’t do. I put stevia in the honey syrup. I used one cup of stevia. You put one and a half cups of water and two tablespoons lemon juice. I find that using the lemon can be a pain, but getting lemonade is better for things like lemon sauce.

Celery: I Promise This Isn't Boring!
Celery is one of those foods that are difficult to eat before it goes bad. To make it last much, much longer in the refrigerator, wrap it tightly in aluminum foil and refrigerate it. I've had celery stay crisp for weeks this way. According to an old issue of Cook's Illustrated, this method works because foil allows the ripening hormone #ethylene to escape. Or buy smaller packages, be sure to plan meals that you will include celery in before purchasing so that you ensure it being consumed.

Ethiopian Restaurant Adds Distinctiveness to South Moger Avenue in Mt. Kisco
Every time a business closes in a downtown Westchester area, part of the soul of the said city escapes into oblivion. Even more so when its replacement operates in accordance with Wall Street rather than the pulse of the community. In turn, with ever-rising rents and all the financial upheaval, says Mt. Kisco small business owner Selamawit Tesfaye, "Now, there's a bank on every corner." But that doesn't mean Mt. Kisco hasn't held its own against the big boxes, and Tesfaye is doing her part to keep distinctiveness alive on her corner.

Gluten and Dairy Free Chicken Recipes
Many people on a dairy-free diet find real butter does not bother them when eaten on occasion. I am one of them and so you will find some recipes calling for real butter. If you avoid butter, please simply replace this ingredient with your butter replacement alternative or a healthy oil of your choice. I find avocado oil is a nice replacement when butter is called for.

Bougie Clams and a Costco Table
Fennel and quartered onions sweat. Enter a healthy dash of coriander for good measure. A good glug of Grigio gets the crispy bits off of the bottom. My grandma’s enameled pot is a fickle mistress. Corn and potatoes are optional. The butter, however, is not. This isn’t a piece for vegetarians; you can read on, but some animals were hurt in the making of this piece. Bivalves to be specific.

Best Father's Day Gifts for a Dad Who Loves to Cook
It's often said that many of the world's best chefs are men, and if you look at the Food Network's lineup, plenty of male names pop up that might enforce that belief. Plenty of male celebrity chefs have proven that cooking isn't just a "girl's thing," including Mario Batali, Gordon Ramsay, and John Oliver.

Gluten and Dairy Free Breakfast Ideas
1. Eggs, omelettes (no cheese), frittata with vegetables but no cheese. If you are used to cheese, please at least try it. You really do not miss the cheese. Any vegetable you like goes well in an omelet or frittata. Think: spinach, onion, mushrooms, broccoli, leeks, drained artichokes, black or Kalamata olives.
